Six reel editing apps, ranked by what you still do yourself

1. Edits, by Instagram. Meta ships it with no paid tier at all, and exports carry no watermark, as of August 2026. It is built for the format rather than adapted to it: a multi-track timeline, auto-captions that land inside the safe zones so the interface does not crop them, a teleprompter, background removal, per-clip analytics, and publishing straight to Reels. Verdict: if you post Reels and you edit on your phone, this is the first thing to try, and trying it costs you an evening rather than a subscription.

2. VN. The app itself exports without a watermark whether or not you subscribe, and its listing shows a Pro subscription in the region of $10 a month as of August 2026 for the extras. Curves, keyframes, LUTs, multi-track audio, and a desktop version that opens the same project. Verdict: the closest thing to a desktop editor that fits in a pocket, and it asks you to think like an editor to get anything out of it.

The honest consequence of those two entries: if you post twice a month, a recent phone and either of these is genuinely enough, and no subscription below will pay for itself. Say that out loud before spending anything, because most of this category is sold to people whose actual bottleneck is not the software.

The bottleneck worth paying to fix is different and specific. It is the queue of takes you filmed and never posted, because the evening the edit needs never arrives. Money solves that. It does not solve a camera you have not picked up.

3. CapCut. The basics still cost nothing, and after the restructure it publishes a Standard tier around $9.99 a month and Pro at $19.99 a month or $179.99 a year, as of August 2026, with reports that the older annual pricing moved onto the new rate at renewal. Keyframes, speed ramps, auto captions, motion tracking, background removal, and the largest trend-template library anywhere. Verdict: the most capable phone editor in existence, and the one whose price moved the most this year, which is a reason to check the tier you are actually on.

4. InShot. Publishes $3.99 a month, $17.99 a year and a one-off purchase around $39.99, as of August 2026, with some stores and regions listing higher figures. The version that costs nothing carries ads and stamps the export. Trim, speed, music, stickers, export. Verdict: the fastest simple trimmer for the money, right for montages and quick cuts, and it does none of the thinking.

A note that applies to both, and to Captions below. Subscribing inside a phone app is routinely more expensive than subscribing on the same company's website, because the app stores take a commission. When a tool has a website, that is usually the cheaper door to the identical product.

5. Captions. Publishes Max at $24.99 a month with 500 credits and Scale tiers from $69.99, and states on its own pricing page that the listed prices are the iOS ones, as of August 2026. It records you, captions word by word in trend styles, and its higher tiers add dubbing and generated presenters. Verdict: the strongest single-device workflow here, and the cut underneath the captions is still yours to make.

6. Cutroom. Not an app, and that is the first honest thing to say. It is a website, so there is no App Store download and nothing that works on one device and not another. What it does is the part the five apps above leave to you.

You upload one talking take, up to three minutes. It transcribes every word, writes the opening headline, places b-roll on the exact words that need showing, from a stock library or from clips of your own you upload once, times and styles the captions from six packs, tightens the dead air, drops the ums, and adds punch-in zooms and transitions. You review it as a transcript: highlight a phrase and a clip lands over exactly those words, delete a line and the cut rebuilds around it. A minute or two later there is a finished 9:16 MP4.

The price per finished reel is the argument. Cutting one upload is 100 credits, covering transcription, the directing pass and the b-roll search. Exporting is 20 credits per finished minute, so a 30 second reel is 110 credits and a one-minute reel is 120. Lite is $19.99 a month for 1,250 credits, about 11 short reels, which is under $2 each, with nothing on the picture at all and one click to cancel.

Verdict on ourselves, both halves. For a reel that is you talking, it removes the whole evening, and that is the only thing it removes. It makes nothing else: a photo montage, a trend-audio lip sync, a product flatlay set to music and any silent footage are all refused at upload, because it needs a talking video with sound. The cap is three minutes, the export is 9:16 only, there is no landscape master and no SRT file. For those, the apps above are the right answer, and Edits and VN are the ones that cost nothing.

If you post occasionally and enjoy the editing, install Edits and keep your money. If you have outgrown it and want real controls on a phone, VN, then CapCut when the template library starts mattering. If you want the cheapest possible trimmer and do not mind the ads, InShot.

If your reels are you talking, and the takes are piling up unposted because the edit never gets an evening, that is the one problem the phone apps cannot solve by being better. Every one of them is a timeline, and a timeline is exactly the thing that is not happening on a Tuesday night.
