Resize a video for X (Twitter): 16:9, square or 9:16

What X asks for
From X's help page on videos, read in September 2026.
- X takes video up to 40 frames a second. A phone filming at 30 is safely under that; one filming at 60 is over it.
- X's largest picture is 1920 × 1200 lying down, or 1200 × 1900 standing up, so a 1080p clip fits.
- X takes almost any shape, so what catches people out is the size of the picture, not the shape.

Crop or pad?
Crop fills the new shape and cuts the edges off. Pad keeps the whole picture and adds bars.
- Crop is the better choice when the person or the product sits in the middle of the frame.
- Pad is the better choice when nothing may be cut, such as text, a logo or a wide product shot.
- You pick black or white bars for padding.
- The preview shows the crop window and how much of the picture you keep.
- On X, crop rather than pad when you change shape, because padding makes the picture bigger than X allows.
- Cropping a 1080p landscape clip gives 606 × 1080 at 9:16 and 1080 × 1080 at 1:1. Both fit inside X's 1920 × 1200.
- Padding the same clip gives 1920 × 3414 at 9:16 and 1920 × 1920 at 1:1, which X refuses. Padding is fine if you keep 16:9.

Limits of a browser tool
Everything runs on your own device, so your device sets the limits.
- File size: up to 500 MB runs comfortably. Bigger files may run out of memory.
- Speed: the engine uses one processor core, so a long re-encode takes minutes.
- First run: the engine downloads once, about 32 MB. After that it starts fast.
- Phones: it works, but a laptop is faster and has more memory.

- What is the best video size for Twitter (X)?
- 16:9 for landscape or 1:1 for square. X accepts shapes from 1:2.39 to 2.39:1, up to 1920 × 1200 pixels.
- How long can a video on X be?
- 140 seconds and 512 MB for accounts without Premium, per X's help page. Trim a longer clip first with the free video clipper.
- Why won't X take my padded video?
- Padding makes the picture bigger. A 1080p landscape clip padded to 9:16 comes out 1920 × 3414, and padded to square 1920 × 1920, against X's largest of 1920 × 1200. Crop instead: you get 606 × 1080 or 1080 × 1080.
- Does the tool change the frame rate?
- No, it keeps your clip's frame rate. X's help page lists 40 frames a second as its maximum, so a clip filmed at 30 is fine and one filmed at 60 is over it.
- Why does my short video loop on X?
- X loops videos of 60 seconds or shorter by itself, and there is no setting to turn that off. The free loop video tool can repeat a clip inside the file too.
- Is my video uploaded anywhere?
- No. The tool runs inside this browser tab, so your video never leaves your device. Only the engine itself is downloaded, about 32 MB, once per visit.
