How do you record your screen for free?
Press record, choose what to share, wait for the 3-second countdown and start talking. The recorder runs on this page, so there is nothing to install.
- Your browser asks you to pick your whole screen, one window or one browser tab.
- Tick the microphone box if you want your voice in the recording.
- Press Pause to stop for a moment. The paused time is left out of the file.
- Press Stop and the recording plays back with its length, its size and a Download button.
- After you stop, your screen is no longer shared. A new recording asks you again.

What file do you get?
Chrome, Edge and Firefox save a WebM file, and Safari saves an MP4. The download always gets the right file extension.
- WebM files play in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, VLC and most video editors.
- YouTube, Google Drive and Slack all accept WebM uploads.
- Windows Media Player and older versions of QuickTime do not open WebM.
- If you need an MP4, the free VLC player can convert the WebM file.

How big is the file?
About 19 MB for each minute. The recorder aims for 2.5 megabits a second, so a minute is 150 megabits, which is 18.75 MB.
- Sound is recorded at 128 kilobits a second, which adds less than 1 MB a minute.
- A still screen, like slides or a document, gives a smaller file than this.
- A video playing on your screen gives a bigger file.
- The real size is shown next to the recording after you stop.

What it can and cannot do
It records and downloads. It does not edit, and it keeps nothing after you close the tab.
- Download before you close the tab. The recording is not saved anywhere else.
- Keep one recording under about 10 minutes, which is under 200 MB. Your browser holds it in memory until you download it.

Tips for a clear screen recording
These tips make a screen recording easier to follow, also for people watching on a phone.
- Share one tab instead of the whole screen. Your notifications, bookmarks and other windows then stay out of the video.
- Zoom the page to 125 or 150% before you start, so the text is readable on a phone.
- Say what you are about to show before you move the mouse.
- Keep each recording to one topic, so people can find the part they need.

Questions people ask
- Is this screen recorder free, with no watermark?
- Yes. It records your screen, a window or a tab and downloads the file with nothing added to it. There is no account, no email step and no upload.
- Does it record the sound from my computer or a tab?
- Only in Chrome and Edge, and only if you tick Share audio when you choose what to share. Firefox and Safari do not give that sound to web pages, so there the file has your microphone only.
- Why is the file WebM and not MP4?
- Because WebM is what Chrome, Edge and Firefox can save from a web page. It plays in VLC and most editors, and YouTube, Drive and Slack accept it. Safari saves MP4. If a tool refuses WebM, VLC converts it to MP4 for free.
- Can I record my phone screen with it?
- No. Phones do not let a web page record the screen, on any browser. Use the screen recorder built into your iPhone or Android phone instead, then move the file to your computer.
- How long can one recording be?
- Keep it under about 10 minutes. The recording stays in your browser's memory until you download it, and 10 minutes is about 188 MB. For longer videos, record in parts.
- Can it record my webcam at the same time?
- No. It records your screen and your microphone only. To film your face, use the free webcam recorder on this site, or the portrait video recorder for a vertical 9:16 video.
- Who should not use this recorder?
