How to merge videos online free
The clips play from top to bottom in the list. Each row shows a frame from the clip, its name, its size and its length, so you can tell similar clips apart.
The line under the options adds up the number of clips, the total length and the total size. After the merge, you see the real length of the new video.
- On a computer, drag a row up or down to change the order.
- On a phone, use the arrows on each row, because dragging does not work on a touch screen.
- Press the cross on a row to remove that clip.
- Nothing is read until you press Stitch, so you can change the order as often as you like.

When are clips merged without quality loss?
When the clips match. The tool then copies them end to end without changing a frame, which takes seconds. Clips filmed on one phone with the same camera settings usually match.
If one clip is different, the tool re-encodes the whole video once. That takes longer than the video plays, and the quality loss is hard to see. A note under the result names the clip and the difference.
- The picture of each clip must have the same format, frame size and frame rate.
- The sound of each clip has to be recorded the same way. Clips from one phone almost always are. A clip from a screen recorder or a download often is not.
- A clip that the phone marked as rotated is always re-encoded, or it would play on its side.
- The note names the clip that did not match, for example that clip 2 is 1920×1080, which is wide, while clip 1 is 1080×1920, which is upright.
- If a merged video stutters where two clips meet, run it again with “Always re-encode” instead of “Fast when it can”. Clips recorded by different apps often do that.

Merging clips of different sizes
When the clips are re-encoded, the first clip sets the shape and the frame rate of the whole video. So put the clip with the shape you want at the top of the list.
Every other clip is scaled to fit that frame and centred on black. Nothing is cropped or stretched. A landscape clip between vertical clips ends up small, with black above and below it.
- To make a landscape clip fill a vertical video, crop it to 9:16 with our free video resizer first.
- Frames wider or taller than 1,920 pixels are scaled down to 1,920. A browser tab lacks the memory for several 4K clips at once.
- A clip without sound gets silence of the same length, so the sound of the next clip starts in the right place.

Only when the clips are re-encoded. A copied merge changes nothing.

Nothing is uploaded, and the limits
The tool runs ffmpeg, a free video program, inside your browser. It downloads once, about 32 MB, and then opens your clips in this tab. Nothing is sent to a server or stored.
A copied merge is quick and light. A re-encoded merge is the heaviest job on these tool pages, because every clip is open at once. Keep this tab in front while it runs.
- The tool warns you when the clips add up to more than 500 MB.
- If the tab runs out of memory, trim each clip down to the part you need first with our free video trimmer, then merge those.
- If the new video is too big to send, make it smaller with our free video compressor and type the size you need.
- There are no transitions, titles or music. The clips are joined with a straight cut.

- Does merging videos lose quality?
- No, not when the clips match. They are copied end to end, so the picture stays exactly as it was. If one clip differs in format, size, frame rate or sound, the video is re-encoded once, and the loss is hard to see.
- Are my clips uploaded anywhere?
- No. The tool runs in this tab after a one-time download of about 32 MB. Your clips are read from your disk, merged here and handed back as a download. Nothing is sent and nothing is stored.
- How many videos can I merge at once?
- Up to 10 clips in one go, joined in the order you set. For more clips, or for long 4K videos, use a desktop video editor, because a browser tab has limited memory.
- Why did one merge take seconds and another take minutes?
- The quick one was copied, because every clip matched. The slow one was re-encoded, because one clip was different from the first. Re-encoding takes longer than the video plays. The note under the result names the clip and the difference.
- Can I add transitions or music between the clips?
- No. The clips are joined with a straight cut, and the sound stays as it was. For fades, titles or a music track you need a video editor. For clips of you talking, Cutroom adds captions, b-roll and a headline for you.
- Who should not use this online video merger?
- Anyone merging more than 10 clips, several 4K files or an hour of video. A browser tab lacks the memory for that, so use a desktop editor. And if your clips are several tries at the same message, film it once more and let Cutroom edit it.
