Resize a video for Instagram Reels: 9:16 in one step

Crop or pad?
Crop fills the new shape and cuts the edges off. Pad keeps the whole picture and adds bars.
- Crop is the better choice when the person or the product sits in the middle of the frame.
- Pad is the better choice when nothing may be cut, such as text, a logo or a wide product shot.
- You pick black or white bars for padding.
- The preview shows the crop window and how much of the picture you keep.
- If you filmed the clip upright on a phone, it is already 9:16 and neither crop nor pad cuts anything.

Everything runs on your own device, so your device sets the limits.
- File size: up to 500 MB runs comfortably. Bigger files may run out of memory.
- Speed: the engine uses one processor core, so a long re-encode takes minutes.
- First run: the engine downloads once, about 32 MB. After that it starts fast.
- Phones: it works, but a laptop is faster and has more memory.
- The tool never blows a video up, so a 9:16 crop from a 1080p landscape clip is 606 pixels wide.

- 9:16, vertical. Instagram's help page accepts shapes from 1.91:1 to 9:16, at least 30 frames a second and at least 720 pixels.
- How do I fit a landscape video into a Reel without cutting it?
- Choose Pad. The whole picture stays and bars fill the top and bottom. Pick black or white bars.
- Why is my cropped Reel only 606 pixels wide?
- The tool never makes a video bigger. A 9:16 crop from a 1080p landscape clip is 606 × 1080. Crop from 4K (you get 1214 × 2160) or film vertical to stay above 720 pixels.
- Should I use 4:5 or 9:16 for Reels?
- 9:16 fills the screen. 4:5 cuts less from a landscape clip: it keeps 45% of the picture, against 32% for 9:16.
- Is my video uploaded anywhere?
