Resize a video for an Instagram post: 4:5 or square

4:5 or 1:1?
Both shapes fit inside Instagram's range, so the choice comes down to how much of the picture you keep.
- 4:5 portrait stands taller in the feed, and from a vertical phone clip it keeps 70% of the picture.
- 1:1 square is the classic post shape, and it keeps 56% of a landscape clip.
- From a landscape clip, 4:5 keeps 45% and 1:1 keeps 56%, so square cuts less from a wide video.

Crop or pad?
Crop fills the new shape and cuts the edges off. Pad keeps the whole picture and adds bars.
- Crop is the better choice when the person or the product sits in the middle of the frame.
- Pad is the better choice when nothing may be cut, such as text, a logo or a wide product shot.
- You pick black or white bars for padding.
- The preview shows the crop window and how much of the picture you keep.

- What is the best size for an Instagram video post?
- 4:5 portrait: 1080 × 1350 from a vertical phone clip. It is taller than square, so it takes more of the screen in the feed.
- Why does my landscape video lose so much in 4:5?
- A 4:5 crop from a 16:9 clip keeps 45% of the picture. Choose 1:1 to keep 56%, or Pad to keep all of it with bars.
- Can Instagram show a landscape video?
- Yes. Instagram's help page accepts shapes up to 1.91:1. It just shows smaller on a phone than 4:5 or square.
- What about Reels?
