A vertical video is a video that is taller than it is wide, built for a phone held upright. The standard shape is 9:16, delivered at 1080 by 1920 pixels, and it fills the whole screen with no bars. TikTok, Reels and Shorts are all designed around it. This page covers the frame, why the shape wins on phones, and what converting sideways footage costs.

Taller than wide is a delivery decision, not a style
Phones are held upright almost all of the time. A vertical video accepts that fact instead of fighting it, so it uses every pixel the viewer is already looking at.
A horizontal video on the same screen gets a strip across the middle. The other two thirds of the display is black, and the picture inside the strip is small.
That size difference is the whole commercial argument. In a feed your video competes with the one before it, and the one before it is full screen.
The same phone, two shapes
Nothing about the content changed. The shape decides how much of the screen the viewer's eye gets.

The numbers, and where not to put things
The working frame is 1080 pixels wide by 1920 tall at thirty frames a second. Higher resolutions exist and re-encode down to roughly this on every major platform.
The frame is not all safe. The platform draws its own interface over the top and bottom, and a column of buttons sits on the right edge.
Captions and headlines belong in the middle band. Anything placed at the very top or very bottom will spend its life underneath a username or a share button.

What happens to footage filmed the other way
A horizontal 1920 by 1080 frame cropped to 9:16 keeps a slice about 607 pixels wide. That is under a third of the picture, and whatever mattered had better be standing in it.
This is why converting a landscape video is rarely a crop and done. The framing has to be rechosen shot by shot, and wide scenes with two people often cannot survive it.
The cheaper answer is to film vertical in the first place when the destination is a feed. Cutroom only exports one shape, a 9:16 MP4 at 1080 by 1920, so the decision is made before the camera rolls.
Questions people ask
- Is vertical video only for TikTok?
- No. TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, Snapchat and most story formats all use the same 9:16 full-screen frame, which is why one vertical file can serve all of them.
- Can I turn a horizontal video into a vertical one?
- Mechanically yes, and it costs about two thirds of the picture. Every shot needs its framing rechosen, and scenes composed for width often have no usable vertical slice. Filming vertical is cheaper than converting.
- Is 4:5 a vertical video?
- It is portrait but not full screen. A 4:5 post fills more of a feed card than a square, but in a full-screen player it gets bars. If the destination is TikTok, Reels or Shorts, 9:16 is the native shape.
The feed is a stack of 9:16 frames and yours competes inside one. Cutroom makes only that frame, which is a limit and also the point.
