Cutroom was built out of their customers' complaints
Cutroom is the alternative. One video in, one finished ad out, made tall for phones. You direct it by highlighting words in your own transcript. There is no timeline.
Submagic is the one you know. Captions and b-roll on short clips. Their own help centre says they do not give refunds, and 49 reviewers describe the same short list of problems.
Cutroom cuts the whole video: the b-roll lands on the words you said, the cuts come with it, and the captions sit on top. Music is one tap away.
Then we built the thing that answers them: the whole edit, made automatically, including the parts where theirs stops.

The b-roll can be your own footage, not stock
B-roll is the footage that cuts away from your face: the product, the workshop, the street. Most tools take it from a clip library everyone uses, so the shot on your ad belongs to nobody. Cutroom looks in your own library first.
Upload your own videos and photos once. Cutroom goes through them and writes down what it sees: man, beard, grey t-shirt, bedroom, warm lighting, lamp. After that it just uses them.
Say "back in my workshop" and you get your workshop. Not a stranger's workshop from a clip site. Our library is still there when you need it, so it doesn't have to be one or the other.
One YouTube comment with 19 likes put it this way: every AI editor the writer had tried worked on a simple talking-head clip and broke on mixed footage. That is about the category, not about one product.

The b-roll lands on the words you said
Most tools drop a clip in on a timer, every six or eight seconds, whether it fits or not. Cutroom reads your transcript and puts the shot on the words it belongs to. If you disagree, you drag it onto other words.
You say "our warehouse in New York" and a warehouse shot lands on those four words. Not the sentence before it. Not the one after.
You watch it happen: your words on the left, the shot highlighted right where it sits. There is no timeline anywhere on the screen, because there is nothing to line up. You are editing the sentence.
One reviewer wrote of their developer connection: "Their API does not allow you to edit captions, or to move b-roll." Submagic, 1 star on Trustpilot, 12 March 2026. That is the API rather than the app itself.

The captions actually match what you said
This is the thing people complain about most in the editing itself: the words on screen are not the words coming out of your mouth. It happens when the AI is left to guess the timing. In Cutroom it never gets to.
Every word you say gets a start and an end, measured from the audio. Those are the numbers the captions use. Nothing guesses.
The AI's only job is to say which words matter. It is not allowed to touch the timing at all. There is no way for it to, and a test fails if anyone tries to add one.
So a caption never lands on the wrong word, never sits across a cut, and never shows a word you took out. Six styles, and you pick where they sit on the screen.

Fix one thing without starting over
The complaint about AI editors is rarely that the first result is bad. It is that fixing it means doing the whole thing again by hand. In Cutroom you change the one bit that bothers you, and everything you already fixed stays fixed.
Upload your recording and go do something else. A minute or two later there is a finished cut sitting there. Most of the time that is the end of it.
When something is off, you change that one thing. Fix a word it misheard. Swap a shot. Move the captions up because they are sitting on your face. Pick a different caption style. Turn the music down.
You never start over, and nothing you already corrected comes undone.

We didn't want to be another billing machine
A lot of these tools make more money from the month you forget to cancel than from the month you actually use them. It shows: most of the negative Submagic reviews are about being charged, not about video.
Here is what people describe happening. You pay, you try it, you don't like it, and you ask for your money back the same hour. The answer is no. It's in the terms.
Or you spend an hour editing, hit export, and only then find out that downloading your own video needs a bigger plan.
Or an export gets stuck, and you have no idea whether it just cost you credits.
We do three things differently, and you can check all three before you spend anything.
If you didn't mean to pay, you get it back. Tell us within seven days and the first charge comes back in full. It is written on our refunds page, and that page is part of our terms. The one case where we say no is on the same page, under its own heading.
The price is on the button, not after it. Exporting costs 20 credits per minute of video. That number sits next to the Export button before you press it.
A failed export costs you nothing. The credits come back on their own. You don't have to spot it, and you don't have to ask.
Their help centre, under "Do you have a refund policy?", last updated 15 December 2023, answers that they do not offer refunds for their SaaS. One Trustpilot reviewer on 30 June 2025 describes paying, then finding the download needed a bigger plan.

Questions people ask
- If I make an ad, can I actually download it, or is there a paywall at the end?
- You download it. On the free tier our own mark sits across the middle of the picture, and that is the only difference: same editor, same length, same export. On Basic and Premium nothing is stamped on it at all. Exporting costs credits, and the price sits on the Export button before you press it, so nothing about the bill turns up at the end. There is no card at the front door, and you get seven days to walk through it: the free tier is three finished videos, with 600 credits, which covers those three edits and re-exporting them after you change a caption.
- If it turns out not to be what I thought, do I get my money back?
- Your first charge: yes, in full, if you tell us within seven days that you did not mean to be billed. No argument. Later charges: we refund unused subscription time when something went wrong on our side, and we say so plainly when we think it did not. Credits already spent on finished videos are not refundable. That video was made and the machines were paid at the moment it ran. There is one case where we say no, and it is written on the refunds page rather than discovered by you. And if an export fails on our side, you do not need to ask at all: the credits come back on their own.
- If I want out, can I do it myself, and does the charging actually stop?
- Yourself, without emailing or calling anyone. In Settings, then Billing, you press Cancel subscription, a screen tells you exactly what that does, and you finish in Stripe's own billing portal, so the cancellation sits on the biller's books rather than on our word. Your plan then runs to the end of the period you already paid for and stops. Nothing is charged after that. There is no fee and we do not ask why.
- If I cancel, do I keep what I already made?
- Yes. Cancelling moves you to the free tier. Your projects stay, your exported videos stay, and credits already in your balance stay spendable. Nothing is deleted because you stopped paying. New edits there are capped at three and carry our mark across the middle, but nothing you already exported changes. Files only go when you delete a project yourself, or when you ask us to close the account, and then everything goes within 30 days.
- My last tool charged me for exports that failed. What happens here?
- Nothing. A failed export hands the credits straight back, automatically, without a ticket. If the job stalls instead of failing, a sweeper finds it and does the same.
- Will the price go up, or will features quietly leave the plan I'm on?
- If we change the price of a plan you are on, you get an email at least 30 days before it applies, and you can leave before it does. A price you have already paid is never changed afterwards. When we split the tiers on 17 August 2026, every workspace that was already paying kept every room it had opened, and that is a flag on the account rather than a promise in a blog post.
- The last tool put the one thing I needed in the tier above. What is gated here?
- Not the editor, and not the b-roll library. Those are the product, and they are on every plan including the free one. Basic, at $39.99 a month, adds avatars and generated music. Premium, at $79.99, adds the drawing tool and product shots, and twice the credits. Both paid plans export at the same size, render at the same speed, and neither puts anything on your video.
