A video editor for photographers: one talking take in, one finished vertical video out

Photographers film more than they post. The behind-the-scenes clip from Saturday's shoot is still in the camera roll, because editing video is a second job on top of culling photos. Cutroom takes one talking take of up to 3 minutes and returns a finished 9:16 video, captions on, b-roll on the right words, in about a minute. Here is how it works, what it costs, and what it will not do.

You film every shoot. The video about the shoot never ships.

Open last month's camera roll. Behind-the-scenes clips from three shoots. A walkthrough of a venue you loved. Twenty seconds of you explaining a lighting setup.

Now count what got posted. For most photographers the honest number is one clip, or none.

The reason is not laziness. Evenings already belong to culling and Lightroom.

Editing video is a second craft with its own software. Learning it costs the hours you bill.

Videographers hit the same wall from the other side. Client films get every editing hour. The studio's own marketing gets none.

So the clips wait in a folder. After three weeks, posting them feels stale, and the folder closes.

Talk about the shoot for three minutes. The transcript does the rest.

Film one take on your phone. You to camera, up to 3 minutes. Talk about the shoot, the location, or the question every client asks you.

Upload it. Cutroom transcribes the take, drafts the cut, places b-roll and burns in captions. The edit comes back in about a minute.

The transcript is the editor. Highlight a phrase and a clip lands on exactly those words. Move it if you disagree.

Delete a line you fumbled and the cut rebuilds around it. Pick one of six caption styles.

It runs in the browser. No app, no timeline, no keyframes. The output is one 9:16 MP4 at 1080x1920, the shape Reels, TikTok and Shorts all want.

Your own shots go over your own words

The b-roll search covers millions of free clips. For a photographer, your own footage matters more.

Upload the behind-the-scenes clips you already shoot. They live in your workspace library, ready for every video after this one.

Highlight the sentence where you describe the golden-hour portrait. Your clip from that session lands on those words.

Your take carries the argument. Your shooting carries the proof. At normal pace, footage covers up to 45 percent of the runtime, so the video shows your work almost as much as your face.

  • Swap the clip in any spot, or search millions of free ones
  • Emphasise a word so it pops in the captions
  • Change the pace and the machine re-cuts the whole thing

Three videos to film this week, with the first line written

One photo, one story. Hold up your favourite frame from the last shoot and explain how you made it. First line: 'This photo took four seconds to take and two hours to plan.'

The client questions. What to wear, how to prepare, what happens if it rains. One question per video. First line: 'Every client asks me this, so here is the real answer.'

The before and after. The flat raw frame next to the delivered image. Clients do not know what your editing buys until they see it once, and seeing it once makes your pricing easier to defend.

In all three, talk to clients, not to photographers. Gear talk impresses peers, and peers do not book sessions.

About 110 credits per finished video, and the first three are free

A batch is 100 credits. That covers the transcription, the director pass and the b-roll search.

Export adds 20 credits per finished minute. A 30 second video lands at about 110 credits.

Your first 7 days include 3 finished videos free, on 600 credits, with no card. They export with a Cutroom mark across the middle.

Lite is $19.99 a month for 1,250 credits and removes the mark. Basic is $39.99 for 2,500 credits, about 20 finished videos a month. Premium is $79.99 for 5,000.

Two videos a week fits inside Basic with room left over. The plan is not the constraint. Filming the take is.

Finished 30 second videos, by plan

Questions people ask

Can it edit my wedding films or client deliverables?
No. It edits one talking-head take into one finished vertical video. Client films need a timeline and a human editor. Cutroom makes the marketing videos that bring the client in.
Do I have to be on camera?
Yes. The take is you talking, and that is the point. Clients book a person, not a portfolio. At normal pace your footage covers up to 45 percent of the runtime, so the camera is off you for long stretches.
What does the free week include?
3 finished videos on 600 credits in your first 7 days, with no card. They export with a Cutroom mark across the middle. Basic at Lite at $19.99 a month removes the mark.
What file comes out?
One 9:16 MP4 at 1080x1920 per project, captions burned in. It posts to Reels, TikTok and Shorts unchanged. There is no horizontal export.
Who should not buy this?
Photographers whose marketing is silent cinematic film with a colour grade. Book an editor for that. For the weekly talking video, this is faster and about 110 credits per finished video.

One talking take about your work. One finished vertical video, your shots placed over your words, captions on. Editing stops being the reason it never got posted.
