These seven are free, easy to read on a phone and widely used for captions. The table says what each one is best for.
- Inter is the safest choice when captions show whole sentences. Its lowercase letters are tall, so words stay readable when small.
- Montserrat Black in capitals is the popular bold caption look. It reads well up to about four words at a time.
- TikTok Sans is TikTok's own font, free on Google Fonts since July 2025, so captions look native on TikTok.
- Anton and Bebas Neue are narrow headline fonts. Use them for a short hook, not for every spoken line.

What makes a font easy to read as a caption?
Captions are read in about a second, small, on top of video that keeps changing. Five things about the letters decide whether that works.
- Tall lowercase letters fill the line, so words do not shrink to specks. Designers call this a large x-height.
- Open letter shapes keep the gaps in c, e and s wide, so the letters do not all look like o.
- Bold lines of even thickness survive a small screen. Thin joins between thick lines disappear first.
- Normal width reads fastest. Very narrow or very wide fonts are harder to read at caption size.
- Plain letters let the eye move on. Handwriting and decorative fonts slow people down.

Can you use these fonts in videos you sell?
Yes, if the font comes from Google Fonts, or from Adobe Fonts while your subscription is active.
- Every font on Google Fonts ships under an open license, most of them the SIL Open Font License.
- That license allows commercial use, including videos, ads and broadcast. It does not allow selling the font files themselves.
- Adobe Fonts are cleared for film, video and broadcast, including YouTube, while your subscription is active.
- Neither license lets you give the font file to someone else as if that licensed them too.
- Instagram Sans is not licensed for public download, so do not use copies of it in paid work.
How to make captions readable: outline, size and position
A caption sits over video that changes every second, so no text color works on every frame by itself.
- Use white or off-white text with a dark outline of about 3 to 4 pixels.
- Add a soft shadow behind the outline. A shadow on its own is not enough, because the web accessibility guidelines ask for real contrast between the text and the picture.
- A dark box behind the text is always readable, but it looks like TV subtitles.
- Set the size so that two to four words fill the width of the screen, in a bold weight. That looks too big on a laptop and reads correctly on a phone.
- Keep captions clear of the username, the post text and the buttons on the right of the screen.
- Show two to four words at a time for a video of someone talking, not a full sentence.
